Combustion is a subject with rich content and strong practicability. In the past, due to low production levels, low technical requirements for the combustion processes and equipment, and low heat intensity, various combustion devices and equipment can also be designed and manufactured according to the mastered experience and laws. But now, especially with the rapid development of jet and rocket technology, it is required to manufacture combustion devices with high heat intensity and wide operating range, and more and more tend to burn at high temperatures, high pressure, and high speed. Therefore, this goal cannot be achieved only by past experience and limited tests. At this time, it was found that the lack of knowledge and understanding of the basic combustion process would hinder the smooth progress of new design and trial production. This forces a thorough study of the combustion process in order to provide correct theoretical guidance in the design, trial production, and testing. While carrying out a lot of basic research on the combustion process, a new and rapidly developing basic discipline of combustion has gradually formed.

The study of combustion includes two aspects: the basic theory of combustion and combustion technology. To study the basic theory and experiment of combustion, analyze and improve the existing combustion technology, and explore and research new combustion technology, etc

Organize and control the combustion process reasonably and effectively. To achieve this goal, it is also necessary to master the combustion characteristics of various fuels (including low-quality fuels, high-energy fuels, alternative fuels, etc.), so as to select appropriate combustion methods and combustion devices. Therefore, the study of fuel combustion characteristics has become an important direction of combustion science.

In addition to light and heat, the fuel will also emit a large amount of smoke, ash, harmful and harmless gases, odor, and noise when burning, and sometimes some unburned fuel will be discharged with the flue gas. Combustion emissions will pollute the environment and harm people’s health and the growth of animals and plants. Therefore, we should actively carry out research on the formation mechanism of combustion pollutants, explore effective methods to reduce or eliminate pollutant emissions by changing combustion technology and carefully controlling the combustion process, and study pollution-free (low pollution) or “clean” combustion technology to eliminate pollution in combustion. Therefore, these researches have become an important direction of combustion science research in recent years.
