Although most of Turkmenistan is covered by yellow sand, it has rich natural gas resources. The proven recoverable natural gas reserves reach 35 trillion cubic meters, making it the fourth-largest natural gas resource country in the world. Turkmenistan is rich in clean energy, while China has a broad market demand space. Since its launch in July 2007, the Amu Darya Project has produced more than 14 billion cubic meters of gas and supplied 13 billion cubic meters of gas annually, and supplied 92.2 billion cubic meters of gas to China. The Project has been described by the President of Turkmenistan as “a model of opening-up and cooperation with the outside world”.
Behind the brilliant achievements, the geology of the area where the project is located in complex, the surface and climatic environment are also very harsh, and the high temperature, high pressure, and high sulfur content have brought difficulties to the implementation of the project.
